Meet Raúl Torrez

Attorney General of New Mexico

Raúl Torrez is New Mexico's 32nd Attorney General.

A former federal prosecutor and senior advisor in President Obama’s Department of Justice, he has worked at every level of the criminal justice system to protect New Mexico communities and fight for justice. Prior to being elected Attorney General, he served as the elected District Attorney for the Albuquerque metro area, where he led one of the state’s largest law offices.

Torrez’s family has deep roots in New Mexico that go back generations — shaped by the same strength, resilience, and determination that define the state’s working people. That inheritance is what continues to drive him to fight for New Mexicans, from Albuquerque to the state’s smallest rural communities.

As Attorney General, Torrez has made protecting children a top priority — suing Meta and Snap for enabling online abuse, investigating failures in the child welfare system, and launching undercover operations that have led to arrests of online predators. He’s held Big Pharma, grocery chains, and utility companies accountable on behalf of families’ pocketbooks. He’s defended New Mexicans’ right to fish and recreate in public waters against wealthy landowners. And he’s been a leading voice among Democratic attorneys general challenging federal overreach.

A graduate of Harvard University, the London School of Economics, and Stanford Law School, Attorney General Torrez lives in Albuquerque with his wife, Nasha, and their two children.
